Williamsburg Enterprise Community Commission, Inc.
(WECC)
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:
The Williamsburg Enterprise Community Commission, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) private nonprofit, community-based, community development corporation organized for the purpose of creating job opportunity through projects focusing on Economic Opportunity, Sustainable Community Development, Community Based Partnerships, and a Strategic Vision for Change resulting in improved economic, social, and educational conditions in the community. The corporation was established in 1994, in Kingstree, the county seat for Williamsburg County. The WECC is administered by an eight- member Board of Directors made up of business and civic leaders, as well as, community representatives.
As a federally designated rural Enterprise Community and nonprofit community development organization, the Williamsburg Enterprise Community Commission, Inc., (WECC) is dedicated to the revitalization of the Williamsburg, Clarendon, Georgetown and Florence counties of South Carolina. The mission of this grass-roots, community-based organization is to provide residents with the ability and opportunity to determine their own quality of life and create their own self-sustaining economic opportunities. The organization’s 2005 Strategic Plan, identified economic development as one of the primary benchmarks to be achieved for both community development and individual empowerment.
The WECC has focused on two primary goals since its inception—housing and economic development. We have assisted in the repair of more than 230 substandard homes at a cost over 2.8 million dollars. WECC initiated development of a 26-lot homeownership subdivision on James E. Clyburn Blvd at a cost of approximately, 1.5 million dollars. WECC served more than 300 homeless individuals and families through its Transitional Housing Program. Workforce Development-Education Programs assisted many in the community to seek and find work. WECC's Small Business Development Center financed and supported 15 new and existing businesses that created 192 jobs, and supported economic development efforts in the county that produced more than 1,900 jobs and helped to attract three new industries.
While facing a full-blown COVID 19 pandemic, WECC was still able to make progress in continuing to assist the community. We were able to complete Emergency Repair of 15 homes in our four-county service area; Georgetown, Clarendon, Florence and Williamsburg Counties. WECC provided a $350,000 loan to a small manufacturing recycling business located in Hemingway, SC which created 22 jobs over the three-year project period that ended in September, 2021.
